A two-time MVP (1935 and 1940), Greenberg famously chased Babe Ruth's single season home run record in 1938, ending the season with 58 round-trippers. (And he won the MVP's at two different positions, First Baseman and Left Fielder.)

One of the great power hitters in baseball history, "Hammerin' Hank" pounded 183 RBI in 1937 and had seven 100+ RBI seasons in his career.

The 5-time All-Star Greenberg was America's first Jewish baseball star. He famously chose to play on Rosh Hashanah in 1934, helping the Detroit Tigers in their pursuit of the pennant, but chose not to play on Yom Kippur that same year.

Highlighting Amazing Feats from The Babe's Career

Babe Ruth Art by Sean Kane

Ruth's "Sultan of Swat" and "The Bambino" nicknames are painted to evoke typefaces reminiscent of the 20's and 30's. In addition, career statistics and milestones of Babe Ruth's career, like his 714 home runs and winning trips to the World Series, are highlighted around the glove set amongst a backdrop of baseball banners and pennants.

Big time Career Statistics Rendered with Tiny little Brushes

Hand-painted text and lettering on the glove includes:
  • Teams George Herman "Babe" Ruth played for: Red Sox 1914-1919, Yankees 1920-1934, and Braves 1935
  • Induction into baseball's Hall of Fame 1936
  • 714 Home Runs
  • All-Star 1933, 1934
  • AL MVP 1923
  • All of the winning World Series Championships he was a part of: 1915, '16, '18, '23, '27, '28, and '32
  • His incredible career statistics: Batting average .342, 2873 hits, 2213 RBI, 2174 runs, Pitching win-loss record of 94-46 and 2.28 ERA
  • And his positions of Pitcher and Outfielder

On the wrist strap appears:

  • His personal dates, Born Feb. 6, 1895, Baltimore; Died, Aug. 16, 1948, New York.

Ordinary Glove Made Extraordinary

"Trapper" Style Glove, before Painting
The painting is on a vintage "Trapper" Style leather glove which measures 10 x 10 inches when displayed fully open. While the manufacturer of this glove isn't known, Trappers were introduced by Rawlings in 1940 and became more popular in the 50's.

The shape, creases, leather wear and color, and type of glove influences the choices I make when creating a painted glove. In this case, the cowhide leather mitt made in Japan and touting a "Grip-Tite Pocket" has soft, supple leather and shows normal wear.  The stitching and seams and piping are in good condition. It feels comfortable to wear and if it didn't have a painting on it, would be ideal to play catch with.

Admittedly, since Ruth was a lefty, a glove for the right hand would have probably been more fitting.

All-Star Materials for Top Quality Results

Artist Sean Kane
I use only the highest grade professional artist quality acrylic paints in the creation of Painted Glove Collectibles.

Like a slugger picking out a favorite bat to head up to the plate with, I've had a few decades of experience with various paints and have settled on Golden Acrylics and Liquitex Professional Acrylic Artist Colors as my medium of choice. The consistent color and durability of these paints holds up to the demands of exacting color mixing and detailed brushwork on the glove.  These paints were selected for their compatibility with painting on leather and long lasting quality.

Additionally, I've used Golden Artist Colors Polymer Matte Varnish to protect the painted portions of this glove artwork. This varnish incorporates a system of Ultraviolet filters and Light Stabilizers (UVLS) to shields the artwork from UV damage.
